Caribbean Coast vs. Pacific Coast:

Both sides of Costa Rica are excellent places to visit for all tourists. Although it’s fun to visit both sides, it is not as easy due to very long travel times. Here are the differences between the Caribbean and Pacific coast of Costa Rica to help you decide which side is best for you.

The Pacific coast of Costa Rica features picturesque coves and waves perfect for surfing. Its beaches are known for their golden sand, which glows beautifully at sunset. With long, expansive shorelines, the beaches here offer a striking contrast to those on the Caribbean side. This region is home to some of the country’s most stunning beaches, along with a wide range of accommodations, from all-inclusive resorts to traditional hotels, which are only 30 minutes away from the Liberia airport.  Some of the beaches along the Pacific coast remain undeveloped, offering a more secluded and authentic experience away from the usual tourist crowds.

The Pacific side has a wet and dry season.  The rainy season is May-November and the dry season is from December-April. The rainiest months are usually September & October, and the hottest months are March & April. During the dry months the temperature can be in the 90’s.  During the wet months the temperatures are in the 80’s.

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica since it has pristine tropical rainforest, fantastic wildlife watching and gorgeous beaches. However, the beaches have short shorelines.  There are no all-inclusive resorts or large hotel chains on the Caribbean side - but for some people, that’s a good thing. You won’t find many tourists on the Caribbean side. The Caribbean side is much more humid and can rain all year long. The summer month is October and the rainiest months are June and November on the Caribbean coast.  Average temperatures year round are in the 80’s.
