Aulani Insider Tips
Located on a huge lagoon perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, and snorkeling - Disney provides life jackets for free
- Consider bringing your own snorkel gear so you don’t have to rent it for each person every day at the resort
- Enjoy the daily activities and crafts at the resort - some crafts cost money
- Enjoy breakfast and lunch at the Ulu Cafe - their Acai Bowl is amazingly delicious
- Trying to save money on food - order pizza to be delivered, or order out with Uber Eats - there are several good restaurants in Ko’Olina and Kapolei nearby
- To reduce the cost, split your stay between a regular hotel and the Aulani
- Don’t miss out on the free firepit storytelling
- Least crowded time is early November - Mid December and April-May (prices are lower too)
- If you’re a soda drinker, you’ll save money by purchasing the refillable mug
- Split your stay at another resort and enjoy exploring the island, hiking, Pearl Harbor, etc. so that when you arrive at the Aulani you can just enjoy 100% of your time at the resort
- You can rent a car at the Aulani for a day if you want to explore the island during your stay, but book it in advance, very convenient and no parking fee to pay at night
- Take the Hele Hele Shuttle, or Speedi Shuttle from the airport to the Aulani - save money with no rental car and no hotel parking fee
- Enjoy the free lobby tour to learn the Hawaiian symbolism in the beautiful decor
- Reserve a spot 90 days in advance for Autie’s Beach House (kids club for kids ages 3-12) - it’s free and fun, but it can fill up fast so don’t delay (there are some additional activities at Auntie’s Beach House that cost extra) - Your kids will need a ‘magic band’ to get into Auntie’s Beach House and you’ll purchase the band there on your first day - prices have been $12.95 but they can change at any time.
- There are organized teen activities. Each day there are about three activities for teens – you’ll find them listed on the daily ‘Iwa. The first time you’ll need to sign your teen(s) in and they’ll be given a wristband. This wristband will allow them to participate in all the other teen activities during your stay.
Family Activities
- Every day at Aulani there are many family activities and classes happening. You’ll need to check the daily schedule since activities are signed up for on the same day. Some of these activities are ukulele lessons, character drawing classes, Hawaiian crafts, hula lessons, and mini-canoe racing. Sign up “in advance” at the Pau Hana Room – Community Hall, otherwise you might not get in.
- Don’t miss the character greetings - there aren’t as many as there are at the Disney parks, but it’s fun to meet the characters at the property
- Pin trading is done at the Aulani, so if you’re a pin trader, don’t forget to bring your pins
- Make sure your kids enjoy the Menehune Adventure Hunt - it’s free. You sign up in the Pau Hana Room. You are given an iPad mini to start your high tech hunt around Aulani. Aunty leads kids around the grounds with fun riddles and quizzes. You can do this more than once during your stay - it’s fun to do it in the daytime and at nighttime.
- If your kids don’t want to snorkel in the ocean, they can snorkel (for a fee) at Rainbow Reef by the lazy river/pool without the fear of any unwanted sea creatures - they’ll see lots of colored fish in an environment where they don’t feel intimidated by the ocean - sign up early in the morning the day you want to participate - life jacket is free
- If you want a pool or beach chair - you can reserve your chairs beginning at 8:00 am - be aware though, that if your chair is left unattended for 1 hour, the staff will remove your items for someone else to use your chair
- There are 3 pools - one is an adults only pool, a splash pad playground, two waterslides, and a lazy river
- If your flight arrives early - before check in time, or if your departure flight leaves later in the day, no worries. If your flight arrives early - before check in, just have the hotel hold your luggage and you can enjoy the resort until it’s time to check in. Or if you have a late departure flight, when you check into the Aulani, be sure to ask the front desk how to sign up for the Luana Lounge which has showers, bathrooms, a TV and couches. They’ll hold your luggage and you can enjoy the pools, the beach, etc., and then enjoy a shower to clean up before going home.
- The resort will take family photos - if you want to do that be sure to reserve it well in advance, and coordinate your outfits for the photos before leaving on vacation
- All beaches in Hawaii are public so you can also enjoy the beach & snorkeling at the resorts/beaches next door to the Aulani
- If you want to do the Luau at the Aulani be sure to book it early because it sells out
- If you’re staying in a villa you can save money by stopping at Walmart or Costco to buy groceries before heading to the Aulani
- Reservations are accepted at two of the ten restaurants 30 days prior to your dining date(s). I highly recommend making reservations as soon as possible. They are the Makihiki and the ‘AMA’AMA.
- Makahiki is a buffet style restaurant that is also where the character meals take place. They have a daily Disney Character breakfast and a dinner 3 times a week. Reservations can be made online in advance.
- ‘AMA’AMA is a fine dining restaurant with beautiful oceanfront views. You will pay a premium price to dine at ‘AMA’AMA and there is a dress code. It’s also good to know that the lunch and dinner menus are different.
