Cancun vs. Riviera Maya - Which is right for you?
If you love vibrant nightlife and plenty of excitement, Cancun is the place for you. But if you prefer a calmer, family-friendly atmosphere with peaceful beaches, and wildlife - such as monkeys, peacocks, etc. running around the resort, the Riviera Maya is a better fit. The resorts in the Riviera Maya are not sitting right next to each other like they are in Cancun. They have acres of grounds instead of a very small space with a beach.

Insider Tips:
- Cancun is a great place for families because the resorts are child friendly and usually have many activities for children and teens.
- Check-in at most resorts can be slow. Be patient. Call your travel agent to see if your resort has a way to speed up your check-in process upon arrival.
- Be aware that the Mexican government will charge you a nightly fee which your resort will collect upon check out. It’s usually less than $3.00 US dollars per night, per room.
- Typically, all restaurants, ice cream shops, and snack bars at a resort are included with your stay, but check with your travel agent to be sure your resort does include everything
- It is not recommended to take a taxi in Cancun/Riviera Maya - only use a shuttle service that your travel agent or hotel sets up for you
- It is not recommended to go into the towns
- Stay off the beach at night (other than right at your resort) and don’t venture down the beach
- Some all-inclusive resorts have additional costs for certain activities, food, or drinks. Before booking your resort be sure you know if there will be any additional costs to pay at the resort.
